History of Lumpkin County
Lumpkin County was created on December 3, 1832. The county was named for former governor of Georgia Wilson Lumpkin. Gold was discovered in the county near Auraria in the 1830s, and the U.S. government briefly had a mint in Dahlonega as a result until 1860. Gold from the county was later used on the roof of the Georgia State Capitol.
