McAfee

The White County McAfees descended from James McAfee (1762 - 1847) and Margaret Cole (1772 - 1862) of Iredell County, N.C.  James McAfee served in the Revolutionary War and was sheriff oh Haywood County, N.C., about 1810. Their eight children were born in Burke, Bancombe and Haywood, N.C., counties.

Their eight children were:

8. Spencer McAfee

By 1837 Alexander Cole, John Whitaker and Thomas Virgil and their parents, James and Margaret (Cole) McAfee had moved to the part of Habersham County, GA., which is now White County.

John Whitaker McAfee (1790 - 1880) married Ann Reynolds (1805 - 1862). He was ordained a Methodist minister in 1820. He became one of five commissioners of the towwn of Gainesville, Hall County, GA., when it was incorporated in 1832. Before 1840, he moved to Frosyth Co., GA., were he served as Clerk of Court of the Ordinary during 1851.

Thomas Virgil McAfee (1810-1896) Married Elizabeth Finley (1813-1896). Thomas Virgil is recorded as been a gold miner, a hotel owner and farmer. It is written in the McAfee history that Thomas Virgil, with the help of his brother, "felled the timber and grubbed the public square upon which was a log cabin for a court house" in Lumpkin County in the year 1833. Thomas Virgil and Elizabeth F. McAfee are buried at Mt. Pleasent Methodist Cemetery in White County, GA.

Thomas Virgil and Elizabeth Finley McAfee had 15 children:

5. Elizabeth Sophronia McAfee (1836-?) married Alex Church
6. James Ervin "Jim" (1838-1916) married Sarah (Sallie) Haynes
7. Franklin Alexander Augustus (1840-1862) married Martha S. Hood
8. Thomas Virgil Jr. (1842) married Mary Walker
9. Sarrah Salvina Salbrina (1844-1926) married John Ash
10. George Washington (1846-?) married Martha West
11. Martha Ann (1848-1957) married Andrew Merritt
12. Harriet L. (1850-?) married James Haynes
13. John Wesley (1852-1935) married Rahcel Ivy Crawford
14. Mary Carolina (1854-?) married Walter W. Quinn
15. Charles Mashburn (1857-? married Lucinda Stringer
